In honor of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Shepherd Hives has put together a set of three 8 oz. muth jars with hand dipped red, white, and blue wax seals. The set contains one jar each of Wildflower Honey, Sourwood Honey, and Cinnamon & Lemon Infused honey.
The set is packaged in a windowed box to show off the old fashioned bottles sporting the red, white, and blue wax seals. You can enjoy these yourself or use them as gifts to friends and relatives.
The Muth jar was the first jar designed specifically for honey, invented by Charles F. Muth in Cincinnati, Ohio, around 1879. Originally, these square glass jars were traditionally used for pickles and horseradish, but Muth adapted them by embossing them with a beekeeping scene (skep) and specific weights to market honey more effectively.
Charles Muth, known as the "Honey King of Cincinnati," was an immigrant from Germany who revolutionized the industry by inventing or improving several beekeeping tools, including the honey extractor (patented in 1878) and the Muth jar itself. His business, which began as a grocery store in 1862, eventually expanded to sell seeds, beeswax, and apiarian supplies, with the jar becoming a staple for selling honey in sizes ranging from 5 ounces to 2 pounds.
