Who we are..
Shepherd Hives is a local, family operated business. We are located in Germanton, NC. Our hives are located in Stokes and Forsyth counties as well as a few "back home" in Mercer County, WV. In the summer, we move some of the hives to Ashe and Alleghany counties for the sourwood bloom.
We look forward to meeting you and providing you with local, raw honey and other products including wax candles.
About Shepherd Hives...
My first experiences with honey bees came as a kid growing up on the family farm in Mercer County, West Virginia. My parents took over caring for the honey bees when my grandfather's health no longer allowed him to do so. I remember the hot summer days catching swarms and harvesting honey. When Dad's work relocated our family to North Carolina... the hives were sold, but the memories lingered. For many years I had considered getting hives and picking up beekeeping again. In 2020 I met a local beekeeper that agreed to sell me two hives and help me get started again. I lost one of those hives the first winter. In the spring, I bought a package, caught a couple of swarms and expanded to 6 hives that second year. We are currently managing over 40 hives. In the spring of 2024, we took 3 hives back to the family farm in West Virginia. Those hives did really well in the spring and summer. We harvested several honey supers full of honey as well as splitting the original 3 hives into 6 hives now.
